A WBCS officer can get posted anywhere in West Bengal. If he or she is a WBCS(Exe) officer he will join as a Block Development Officer(BDO) generally in a small town. Later with every promotion, they will be transferred to different locations across the state and also in different departments.

DESCRIPTION OF PRELIMINARY TEST FOR THE WBCS EXAMINATION
The WBCS Preliminary Syllabus comprises eight subjects. There are 200 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) and each subject is assigned 25 marks. The duration of the exam is 2.5 hours. The Prelims is only a screening test, and its total marks (200) are not considered for the final selection of the candidate.
In the preliminary exam, the commission tests the level of knowledge of a graduate of any faculty from any recognized university.

DESCRIPTION OF MAINS EXAM FOR THE WBCS EXAMINATION
Candidates who can clear phase 1 will be eligible for the next phase that is Mains. The main exam is a subjective exam. Here candidates will have to attend a total of 7 papers. The 7th paper will be an optional paper. Only the candidates who want to be a WBCS Grade A or Grade B officer will have to attend this optional paper of 400 marks.
The optional paper will include 2 papers, each of 200 marks. The other 6 papers are common for all and each paper will carry 200 marks. Except for Paper- I, Paper-II and Paper VII all papers will be of MCQ type. You will get 3 hours to finish each paper. There will also be negative marking in each paper. For every 3 mistakes, 2 marks will be deducted here.
Out of six compulsory papers, 4 papers will be of MCQ Type to be answered in OMR answer sheets. These papers are-(i) General Studies- I, (ii) General Studies- II, (iii) The Constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of Reserve Bank of India and (iv) Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning. The remaining two compulsory papers i.e. Paper – I and Paper – II will be of written type examination.

FINAL AND LAST PHASE FOR THE WBCS EXAMINATION
The final and last phase is the Personality Test. This is a vital phase of this prestigious exam. The final selection will be made depending on the Mains Exam and Personality Test. There will be 200 marks on the Personality Test. That means the final selection will be made on a total of 1800 marks (1600 marks in Mains and 200 marks in Personality Test).

QUALIFICATION AND AGE CRITERIA
Candidates must have a degree from a recognized university in order to appear WBCS Exam. They also will have to be within the ages of 21 to 32 years regarding this. For Group B a minimum age criterion is 20 years (Age relaxation available for different categories). The candidates must have the ability to read, write and speak in Bengali. (not required for those candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali).
